Blow Molding Machine Buyer's Guide: Single-Layer vs. 2-Layer vs. 3-Layer Sandwich

The Short Answer

For price-sensitive markets, choose the 3-layer sandwich machine (virgin inner/outer, recycled core). Choose 2-layer when you have specific requirements for appearance or the inner layer. Single-layer virgin HDPE makes sense only when cost is no object or the order specifies it.

Which 2-Layer Configuration?

Virgin inside / recycled outside: for drums holding ordinary chemicals where interior contact matters and exterior appearance is secondary.
Recycled inside / virgin outside: for branded products where exterior appearance matters; virgin outer layer for looks, recycled inner layer for cost.

2-layer sits between single-layer and 3-layer: saves material vs. single-layer, simpler structure than 3-layer. The choice depends on customer requirements for appearance and inner-layer performance.

Why the 3-Layer Sandwich Wins on Margin

Virgin material alone costs ¥98/unit for single-layer — no room for profit in a price war. The sandwich 3-layer costs ¥76–82/unit, saving ~¥24/unit. At 500,000 units/year, annual material savings exceed ¥10 million — the machine premium pays back quickly.

Important clarification: both inner and outer layers of the sandwich structure are virgin material. Appearance, strength and sealing match single-layer; UN certification passes normally. It is not a downgraded product — it is an economical product strategy for price-sensitive markets.

EU Export Warning

EU Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on packaging and packaging waste (PPWR), Article 7: post-consumer recycled (PCR) content in plastic packaging must reach 35% from 2030 and 65% from 2040.
